Position:

Goat Herd Manager will care for roughly 1000 head of meat goats. The herd size is subject to change depending on the year. The Herd Manager will be incentivized to increase stocking rate as long as it is profitable and feed is available. It is crucial for the Goat Herd Manager to learn, understand and implement Holistic Management and Regenerative Agriculture principles. During growing season, April-October, goats will be moved frequently for the grazing and utilization of available forage. This will include grazing the levees and ditch banks throughout roughly 2500 acres of wild rice ground. Goats may also be moved to fields, pastures or rangeland that have significant weed pressure whereby goats can act in the place of spraying. During the winter months, goats may be managed in several different ways or a combination of the following: continuing to graze ditch banks, grazing dormant alfalfa fields, or eating hay in a fixed location. Ideally, hay feeding would be kept to a minimal (limited to periods of frigid temperatures, snowstorms, etc) and the herd manager would use standing forage on the ranch as much as possible. Goat Herd Foreman will oversee kidding of the goats, responsible for safe and healthy deliveries and any necessary medical or veterinary attention. Marketing the goats will likely be done by or in tandem with managers. Shipment or freight of goats to the sale barns in the Central Valley will be a part of the job, on a case by case basis.

Required Skills:

This position will need someone with advanced levels of stockmanship. The individual will need to be able to observe and respond to the herd by addressing animal health, nutrition, breeding, kidding and animal’s growth and performance etc. Not only will this individual be comfortable around the goats, they will also effectively and efficiently herd the animals with humane stockmanship practices. Dogs will also be used for herding and animal protection. A major part of this job will be setting up and management of temporary fencing on an ongoing basis. Proficiency in fence building, especially electric fence will be needed. Finally, the Herd Manager will possess vision to see pieces of land that are underutilized and scrappiness to execute on grazing opportunities.

Evenings, nights, weekends and holidays may be of on-call nature depending on seasonality;

In addition to base compensation, there may be additional incentives unique to this role; for example, increasing animal performance/gain.
