It’s the first time the job has come available in over 20 years. This is a unique and rare opportunity for a serious young rancher to hone their trade under the supervision of a great cattle ranch family in preparation for one day running their own ranch, or for a seasoned rancher to enjoy a very stable job working with outstanding cattlemen on an exceptional ranch with an elite reputation. Duties will include all aspects of year-round cow/calf care. Applicants must understand and truly love ranching and have prior cattle handling experience both on foot and on horseback. Applicants must be able to lift 100 lbs, work in all weather conditions and do manual labor. Limited haying, with no row-crop. Must have some experience using tractors, skid loaders, etc. Welding and cutting abilities are a plus. General maintenance and mechanical abilities are a plus, as we maintain high quality equipment. Prior experience with heat detection and AI helpful, but not required. Skill with ranch type horses required. This is a seven day a week job during calving season. No tobacco use, please. Drug test and criminal background check may be required. Three written references required. Salary is flexible and will be based on prior experience, references and an in-person interview, which may include a horsemanship demonstration on one of our horses. In return we will provide a beautiful, updated, two-story stone house, with full basement, built in the mid-1800s with accompanying, matching stone barn, as well as a separate two-car garage, with a private office, all as part of the employee package. The property comes with a huge fenced yard for kids to play in. Good local schools within 20 minutes full of nice, well-mannered rural kids with school bus service to and from the house. Only one hour from Manhattan and Kansas State University. The closest local town for quick errands is Council Grove, which is a short 20-minute highway drive through the scenic Flint Hills. You’ll be only 35 minutes from Emporia, also a highway drive.
