Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION

General Ranch Associate

Date: May 2025 Department: LIVESTOCK & AG

Reports to: Livestock and Agriculture Manager Employment: FULL TIME/HOURLY

Ranch Mission

At The High Lonesome Ranch, we are dedicated to sustainable ranching, responsible land stewardship, and producing high-quality, grass-finished beef. Through regenerative practices, conservation, and efficient operations, we enhance biodiversity, improve productivity, and support a thriving ecosystem. We foster a workplace culture that values leadership, innovation, and inclusivity while strengthening our ties to the community. We strive to set industry standards in direct-to-market meat distribution and to inspire the evolution of western land management.

Skills and Qualifications

To accomplish these goals, HLR is seeking a highly motivated, trustworthy individual who is well-versed in general ranch operations. Currently, the ranch has an expanding cow/calf operation that will supply a growing direct-to-market beef business. The cattle are moved frequently and will travel approximately 70 miles from the desert winter range over the mountains to headquarters each year.

While there will be some cowboy-related tasks, this is not a dedicated cowboying job. Instead, the primary focus is on maintaining ranch infrastructure, supporting seasonal operations, and ensuring the smooth movement of cattle. We manage 225,000 acres of public and deeded land, and this position plays a crucial role in the logistical operations of the ranch. A seasonal list of duties is included below but the job may include other reasonable tasks within the skill set and scope of the department.

Duties by Season:

Early Spring: Supporting cattle movement to winter range, calving assistance, fencing, water hauling, and preparing for irrigation.

Late Spring & Early Summer: Irrigation (multiple locations), fencing, hay-cutting preparation/cleanup, equipment operation, and some water hauling.

Late Summer: Reduced irrigation, fencing, infrastructure improvements, mechanical work, and continued water hauling as needed.

Fall & Early Winter: Preparing to ship calves, continued infrastructure/mechanical work, general facilities upkeep, and winterization of infrastructure and facilities.

Winter: Slower season with negotiable options.

This position is limited to 40 hours per week, except in cases of significant need for overtime. It is ideal for an experienced, self-sufficient candidate seeking a lower-intensity ranch role with a strong work-life balance, competitive benefits, and a high-quality living environment in a beautiful location.

We are committed to building a strong, long-term team. Unnecessary drama, substance abuse, negligence, and damage to equipment or facilities will not be tolerated. However, we recognize that mistakes happen, and employees will be treated fairly.

Desired Skills:

Irrigation (flood and side-roll systems)

Fencing (electric, barbed wire, lay-down, and small ruminant fencing)

Hauling (water, equipment, and cattle using Class 8 water trucks, gooseneck equipment trailers, and stock trailers)

Hay Handling (assisting with hay recovery—baling done by a custom cutter)

Equipment Operation (skid steer, backhoe, agricultural tractors, bulldozer)

Pasture Moves (assisting on horseback, ATV, or on foot)

Calving Assistance (monitoring, assisting, and documenting)

Basic Welding

Mechanical Skills (basic truck, trailer, and equipment maintenance)

General Handyman & Facility Maintenance

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required

Strong physical ability to perform job tasks

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Trustworthy and responsible

Good communication skills

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Position Type: Fulltime, Hourly. Base Pay: $17 - $20/hr DOE

Work Location: The High Lonesome Ranch, Debeque Colorado.

Benefits:

On-Site Housing Available (optional, inquire for details)
