Description:
Cheyenne Bodie aka “War Cough”

2016 Buckskin Pony Gelding

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

A pony that has gone by many names…

Super Pony, War Cough, Cheyenne Bodie, The Musteno

This is an individual to say the very least, a pony with more heart than 50 horses.

Super Pony is known all over the states for his big head and even bigger heart. He is a conversation piece, and a really really neat dude that I am excited to share with you. I apologize in advance for this long description- but I feel compelled to share the whole story to preserve the memory of ones lost, and to highlight this pony for the meaningful steed he is.

This buckskin gem was born onto an Indian reservation in Wyoming, where he was purchased by a friend of mine, where he was utilized on their cattle operation in Yoder, WY. He became a legend around southeast Wyoming securing the nickname “Super Pony” as he was THE STICK for the gritty jobs. If you needed to go gather a set of bulls through muck and mud, climb onto the ol musteno and hold on because he’s got you!! He will take you where no horse will go. This wicked fast and handy broke pony is impenetrable. He has no quit, no fear, and no BS.

One day, while they were trekking out across the plains of Wyoming to check on their cattle, his foot fell through a gopher hole causing him to literally flip head over tail.

It was a wreck of wrecks. A freak thing.

Thrown onto the ground, his rider came to, thinking surely this poor pony’s leg would be broken. She dreadfully turned around to see what she thought would be the inevitable, but no. “Super Pony” was standing over her with an innocent expression, waiting for her to climb back on. Not a nick, not an ounce of lameness. Not to mention he could’ve ditched her in the middle of nowhere. It was a miracle.

He looks each day in the face and scoffs saying, “Are you feeling lucky, punk?”

For the two years they had him, they used him for many different aspects of ranch work. And if you are familiar with that area, you would know their ranching style is a little different than down here in most parts of Texas. Compared to the traditional Texas Cowpuncher, Wyoming natives have more of a vaquero style. Generally branding with a head and heel- with long ropes and flat bill cowboy hats. This pony was exposed to it all!

During his time in Wyoming, he was noted for his interesting appearance, oddball cough, and tenacious attitude. This macho steed has been through the snow, sleet, and soot- unfazed by the silly troubles of normal horses. This is a pony of True Grit.

When they made the decision to sell Super Pony, they were fairly frustrated with him. They told me that no matter what they did, he never got any worse, but never got any better! He never bucked or did anything particularly wrong, but in their opinion, he just never “advanced”.

Enticed by his story, and the idea of a quote on quote “flashy project” to ride for a few months- I told them we would take him. Everyone, including my boyfriend at the time, apprehensively laughed- wondering what I could possibly want with this gritty Rez pony, but I thought it would be an interesting one for us to partner on.

Jackson will put more miles on him, and I would sell him!

A few months went by before we were able to drive up to Wyoming to pick him up, but once he stepped off the trailer and onto the Texas soil he officially became the mascot of our herd. My 6’3” boyfriend could be seen all over Decatur flopping around on this 13.3 hand pony. Dragging logs, chasing cattle, working the flag, you name it they were doing it! Super Pony gained the name, Cheyenne Bodie and/or The Musteno, after Jackson boasted that he could go through literally anything. If you wanted to go take out a tree- this pony could maul it over. Both Jackson and I were fascinated by him, and this pony was just a character to have and use. He operates like he is 10 feet tall, and watching him be used by a 6 foot man was so funny to see- even though they were in perfect unison. Jackson branded on Cheyenne Bodie the fall of 2022 and into spring and summer of 2023. Cheyenne Bodie was used all over the great state of Texas, and was thoroughly exposed to the outgoing “Panhandle Cowboy” way of operating. It wasn’t until Cheyenne Bodie’s days in the west- where he gained the new nickname “War Cough” by the other cowboys on the jobs. Because one thing that will always go with this pony is his squaw like cough. Not like he is sick, and not like he is hard of air, but he just has this cough that will randomly come about for a few strides. (He has been examined by a vet and has done it since he was in Wyoming). Not much to think of until you are on a trot line and everyone around you is silently annoyed with the random persistent hack. Hence came the name “War Cough”.

The squaw of Cheyenne Bodie.

In July of 2023 (a little over a year to date now), my boyfriend, Jackson Taylor, tragically passed away at a ranch rodeo in New Mexico. For the next few hard months, Jackson’s string of horses ran riderless through his parents ranch in Quiteque. I didn’t know what to do or how to handle any of it, but Jackson’s dad and a few of his friends made a point of getting this pony back to me. This big headed, small hipped, larger than life indian Rez pony.

He just stared at me like he knew. He knew the hurt, he knew the good, an the knew the bad. The first ride I had on him back from the panhandle was such a surreal feeling. To be able to ride behind someone who had passed away, was something I never expected to experience. This little musteno rode just like all of Jackson’s horses did. You could feel the hours, and you could see the miles these two had gone together. It was amazing.

Not knowing if I was to keep or sell this pony, his dad recommended I follow through on the initial plan Jackson and I had- which was to follow through and sell him. So I got the idea to do the absolute best job I can on this measly little indian Rez pony.

I made it my mission!

Since then, War Cough spent a little over half a year with a reining trainer, putting the finishing touches on an already GREAT ride, and learning a few tricks too! He was taught to bow, and the beginning stages of laying down on command!

To date, this is still one of the most reliable creatures I have ever been around.

He has ABSOLUTELY ZERO BUCK. None. No kick, bolt, bite.

Climb on him and go right to work. You can use him to lunge your freshies around, or go catch a cow on a whim- there are no surprises with him.

He is fast, he is forward, but he is NOT a runaway. He rides off of our seat, tracks a circle, rides confidently outside, and will spin a hole in the ground. War Cough has a huge stop and is SO COMFORTABLE TO RIDE. Not only does this pony ride like a sports car, but he has the towing capacity of a 3/4 ton pickup truck. If you want to pull a house down, he will damn sure try his heart out to do so. This gelding has been taken ahold of, knows collection, and softness off of your hands and seat. He knows his leads, lope departures, and has a LONG trot that can travel some country, or a nice slow trot too!

When he is turned out, he will either run right up to you or run away before you even open the gate- its generally a 50/50 chance. Either time he knows how to be caught and is gentle to handle all the way around. He has also been the one I have run with my stud colt, so he is really commendable on his herd behavior as well.

He has solid black feet, barely needs trimming when barefoot, and is as hardy as they make them. He loads, hauls, stands tied, ground ties.

I will be 100% okay if this pony doesn’t sell as he is not the general rum dum deadhead you see on this site, but he is tried & true and I would truly love to see him go somewhere he can be used and appreciated. He would be a wicked heel horse or a step up pony for a handy kid, and I also think he would excel in the speed events too!
