The entire Akaushi breed descends from 13 cows and 6 bulls, two of which are sons of the 13 cows.

Japan has since declared all Wagyu and Akaushi genetics to be national treasures, and export of further genetics is strictly prohibited.

Outcross genetics are of immense value to maintain pedigree diversity and minimize inbreeding within the Akaushi breed outside of Japan.

Mitochondrial DNA (the powerhouse of the cell) is only inherited from the mother of an animal, emphasizing the importance of direct maternal descendants of the original cows from Japan.

One of the least broadly distributed maternal bloodlines in the Akaushi breed is Dai 9 Kobai 73.
