Job Purpose: The CDM Barn Manager will be responsible for managing and coordinating the overall well-being of the horses, farm animals, and supporting CDM educational programs and services that are aligned with CDM’s mission and vision. The manager will also create a clean, healthy, and positive living environment for all the horses and farm animals. CDM’s equine services and programs are central to promoting and encouraging authentic connections, supportive community, and service that result in contributions to community. Because CDM is an ecosystem and in collaboration with nature, many unforeseen circumstances and newly developed needs arise every day. This role should be prepared to work with these unforeseen occurrences with the support of the CDM team; including the ability to lift over 50lbs and work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Primary Objectives:

• Manage and coordinate the overall health and well-being of the horses.

• Ensure that the barn/arena area is clean, safe, and well-maintained.

• Assist in planning and facilitating community horse programs.

• Mentor and create training opportunities to increase CDM staff hands on safety and handling experiences.

Primary areas of Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Manage and coordinate daily feeding, provision of water, mucking stall/paddock areas, and turnout as determined for each horse. Grooming and bathing horses.

• Work/exercise horses, using methods that align with CDM, to prepare them for horse programs and for maintaining overall health.

• Manage inventory related to supplements, hay, and other supplies needed to support health and wellness and maintenance the barn/arena area.

• Coordinate scheduling for all medical, Ferrier, and other equine-related service providers.

• Track feed, Ferrier visits, and all health-related updates from equine medical providers.

• Serve as the lead with coordinating volunteer service activities in the barn and arena areas.

• Maintain the cleanliness of the ban/arena areas including organizing grain, hay, equipment, and other storage areas.

• Cultivate CDM’s culture, values, and vision for team members, volunteers, and community programs.

• Meet regularly with the Equine team to collaborate, exchange ideas, and co-facilitate, and assess the overall quality and needs connected with barn operations.

• Meet regularly with CDM team members to collaborate, receive input and support to ensure quality of program services, best practices, and ongoing support, as needed, for equine, barn operations, regenerative agriculture, and other land projects.

• Communicate effectively with the CDM Executive Director (ED) and providing all information necessary for the ED to make informed decisions.

• Attend CDM team meetings.

• Other duties as assigned.

Excellent Skills:

• At least 3 years working with horses and other farm animals; with a working knowledge of basic principles of horse care and handling techniques.

• Leadership, collaboration, and management: positively influencing others to achieve the best results.

• Effective communication: speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, respectful, and timely, manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.

• Facilitation skills and concepts that are clear, thorough, and effective imparting CDM’s culture as a part of the team’s learning and the community’s program experience.

Education/Experience:

• Prior experience in barn management.

• Facilitating, leading, or managing professionals with diverse skills, perspectives, and backgrounds.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively (team environment).

• Using Microsoft and Google Suite

• Experience operating a tractor and other heavy equipment.

• Must have a valid driver’s license.

• Must be able to lift over 50lbs and work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions.
