High Desert Cattle Co. is located in Eastern Oregon on the edge of the high desert between Burns and John Day. We are a mid-sized family operation that needs a full time camp man to live in primitive conditions in the mountains an hour from the closest town. This is not a comfy job with much for amenities. You’ll need a teepee or a wall tent because that is where you will live for the summer. Camp will be moved several times as the snow melts back and the cattle move from pasture to pasture. Successful applicant will provide their own string of horses and will need to be able to shoe them as well. We’ll provide shoes and nails. Might be able to supply an extra horse or two if you can’t provide a full string. You will need a pickup, as we don’t have an extra one for this job, but we will cover your fuel. Half of your time will be spent fencing in steep mountain country. Some of the fences are really bad and it is not fun. We will provide a gooseneck stock trailer, 4-wheeler, chainsaw, and all material needed for fencing. You can come back to the ranch (2 hour drive) to shower and get fuel on the weekends. Not an ideal job for a family situation. The fun part of the job is the cowboying. We trot lots of miles, trail our cattle 25 miles to the mountain and 25 miles back home in the fall. The allotments total 50,000+ acres and you’ll see most of it from the back of a horse. Experience gathering and handling cattle in the mountains is a plus. Would prefer someone who can rope and savvies livestock. Good horse pasture at the main camp with room for 5-8 horses. Cell service at the main camp, but it’s very hit and miss on the rest of the mountain. Open to male or female applicants. More interested in your work ethic, integrity and ability, than your gender. Dogs okay as long as they aren’t barkers that cause wrecks. We use dogs and appreciate good ones.
