Description:
This is a demanding but highly rewarding position. Applicants must understand all tasks that will be expected of them. This person is expected to commit for the entire foaling season (through approximately June or July). Do not apply if you have any uncertainty or any time conflicts! If possible, this person can switch to the day crew after foaling season ends to help with sales preparation and off-season projects. Housing will continue to be provided after foaling season ends with a commitment to continue with the current position the following foaling year.



- Position available immediately.

- 5 nights/week, choice of 2 nights off. Hours are 5pm – 7am. Employee can sleep in between mare checks and after other duties are completed for the night.

- Live in position – housing and utilities are included.

- Willing to train the right candidate.

- Salary and benefits will be discussed with the top candidates.





Applicant must possess the following abilities:

- Horse experience is a must. Preference will be given to applicants with advanced handling skills. Employee will work with mares (broodmares and recipients), foals, and potentially stallions.

- Independent worker and self-starter.

- Willing to follow Vista Equine procedures and protocols.

- Easily identify an emergency situation and call the veterinarian on call.

- Mentor university interns that are scheduled to assist until 10pm.





Daily tasks include:

- Check and milk all heavy pregnant mares.

- Twice nightly checks of all resident horses to identify any injuries or illness.

- Approximately hourly checks of heavy pregnant mares.

- Place foaling transmitters in mares that are closest to foaling.

- Monitor and assist all foalings. Assess foal’s presentation, assist delivery if necessary, administer any necessary treatments to mare and foal.

- Continue to monitor foal for responsiveness, ability to stand, nurse, etc.

- Continue to monitor mare for excessive pain, acceptance of foal, passing of placenta, etc.

- Administer any needed nighty treatments to resident mares. Ability to administer IM and IV injections. Ability to pull blood on a mare and/or foal.

- Prepare medications and supplements for the following mornings crew.

- Assist veterinarians with late night breedings, embryo transfers, emergencies, foal care, etc.

- General cleaning of the office, lab, and stock area.

- Complete medical records and paperwork.

- Loading and unloading of late-night arrivals and departures.
