Description:
We are a custom-grazing operator located in north-central Nebraska. About 30 miles northwest of Broken Bow. We would like to find a seasonal person to assist with our custom grazing operations. The 2020 season is anticipated to consist of custom-grazing about 500 cow/calf pairs and around 600 stocker calves.

We operate on a diverse mix of forages. We have native range as well as both perennial and annual improved pastures. Some of the grazing occurs under center pivot irrigation. Knowledge of barbed-wire and electric fence will be necessary or you’ll need to learn it.

Grazing occurs in managed grazing. Herds are moved regularly. Sometimes daily and sometimes up to a week between moves, depending on the forage source, weather, etc. Cow/calf pairs are delivered to our operation as a pair – so there’s no calving required. Grazing management varies throughout the year but will include native range management, daily strip grazing of summer annuals, and intensive management of perennial irrigated pastures.

Our ideal candidate would be available in early April and continue until all the stock goes home around late November. We’d like to offer year-around employment, but we don’t have any stock to manage in the wintertime. Be a great position for somebody who likes to go south in the wintertime.

We don’t put up hay, but some limited farming may be necessary planting the annual crops. The machinery driving duties will be be limited. The primary duties would be herd health checks, daily water checks, monitoring pasture and discussing when cattle should be moved, maintaining fences, tending to irrigation systems, doctoring sick cattle, and keeping accurate grazing records.

Candidate would be assisting an aging owner who lives on the place. We don’t have any housing on the place – but we have some contacts in the area to try to assist in finding a place to live. Its not a terribly remote location – but it’s a ways to buy dinner or anything else.

We don’t have any horses on the place and use side by sides and 4-wheelers. If the candidates wants we could discuss using horse for cattle health checks and/or moving cows.

We had a good herdsman the last two years, but he got a job with NRCS and moved on. So we’re looking for another candidates. You would be the only person on the place – so the ability to work with limited supervision will be necessary. You don’t need to know everything – a willingness to learn and share your knowledge/experience is appreciated.

Thanks for looking. Call or email jjwendell96@gmail.com to discuss the particulars. We can be somewhat flexible on timelines. Anticipate working 40-50 hours/week.
