If you are looking for a well broke horse that can do it all, from ranch work, to playdays, to packing the older kiddos around, then take a look at Derby. He is very nicely broke, with an excellent neck rein and a soft mouth, so even kids and beginner riders can easily steer and stop him. Derby spent the majority of his life on a ranch out in West Texas, where he was used for all phases of ranch work, including sorting pairs, roping and doctoring cattle in the pasture, and checking fence. He is the type of horse you can just pull out of the pasture, hop on and go without worrying about warming him up or getting bucked off. He rides just as good with a rope around his neck or a halter as he does with a bridle. Derby has never offered to buck, rear, bite, kick or take off, and is about as quiet and well mannered as they come. He is a 17 year old gelding, GRADE, but don’t let his age fool you, he is in amazing shape, sound and healthy, and with plenty of life left. Derby is 15.1 hh and stout with a big hip, wide chest and plenty of bone. My 3 year old son has been riding him for the last several months, but he is just a hair too much horse for him unless he has been warmed up well first. An older child or beginner adult would have no trouble with him, and he would also make an excellent horse for a weekend rancher to pull out and go check cattle on. Derby is quiet and laid back and rides on a loose rein, but will easily step into a trot or lope if asked. He is a pleasure to ride out in the pasture, crosses water with no problem, and isn’t spooky. He can be ridden out by himself or with other horses, will happily lead or follow, and doesn’t mind being separated from the group. Derby has a smooth trot and lope that are easy to sit to, and will sidepass and work a gate. He has also been ridden alongside the road and in traffic and isn’t bothered by it. $3500.
