Description:
The Opportunity



The 6,800-acre Shield Ranch is located in southwestern Travis and northern Hays Counties in the Barton Creek Watershed. The Ranch is a protected wildland in close proximity to the City of Austin. Ninety-three percent of the Ranch is under conservation easements with The Nature Conservancy and the City of Austin. The Ranch has received numerous awards (including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Statewide Lone Star Land Steward Award) and has been widely recognized for its commitment to land stewardship, water quality, ecological diversity, outreach, and education. The Ranch has been in the Shield-Ayres-Bowen family since 1938.



The Landscape and Facilities Caretaker, under the supervision of the Land Steward, will be part of a team focused on conservation, restoration, research, ranching, and outreach initiatives. Responsibilities include maintenance of native landscapes and 12 miles of hiking trials; day-to-day repairs and maintenance of facilities; equipment; and security of the property.



Duties and Responsibilities



• Maintenance and repair to ranch infrastructure and equipment

o Proficient at basic handyman services including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical

o Make minor repairs to barns, residences, and ranch equipment

o Maintain fleet of ranch vehicles and trailers

• Management of landscaping and exterior maintenance

o General maintenance of native landscapes including mowing, string trimming, weeding, pest control, and plantings

o Maintain landscape irrigation systems

o Maintain water systems (rainwater and wells)

o Maintain hiking trails

o Maintain grounds for nature immersion campsite

o Safe operation of skid steer, tractor and other ranch equipment

• Wildlife habitat and range management

o Assist in management of lease hunting operations, including interface with hunters

o Assist with exotic invasive species control

o Assist with prescribed burns

• Property Management and Security

o Manage access to ranch by contractors, utility crews, guests

o Monitor property and respond to incidences of trespass in accordance with plan

o Monitor archeological and historical sites for signs of looting and other disturbance

• Administration

o Participate in development of annual budget

o Manage expenses within parameters of ranch budget

• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support ranching, conservation, restoration, research, owners, staff, and outreach initiatives



Qualifications



• Interest in and commitment to an ethic of stewardship, Shield Ranch conservation objectives and the owners’ vision for the future of the Shield Ranch

• Firsthand experience in property management and repairs with skills to maintain and repair houses, outbuildings, water systems, vehicles and ranch equipment

• Experience with operation, maintenance, and minor repair of lawn mowers, 2-cycle engines (chain saws, string trimmers, etc.), ranch vehicles, trailers, tractors, skid steers, sprayers, and other ranch equipment

• Knowledge and interest in native plants and the ecology of the Texas Hill Country

• Experience with trail maintenance

• Personable and able to relate well with owners, other employees, hunters, and guests

• Must be self-directed and highly motivated, a self-starter

• Highest standards of honesty, integrity and discretion

• Direct and open communication

• Sound judgment

• Excellent problem solving

• Outstanding organizational skills and detail-oriented

• Able to work efficiently and complete tasks within a timely manner

• Attentiveness to matters of safety, risk, and liability

• Sensitivity to security of ranch property

• Competent with Microsoft Office, Dropbox, and email

• Valid Texas driver’s license

• Willingness to live and work in an urbanizing environment (must live on the ranch)

• Must be able to occasionally work nights, weekends and holidays when required

• Minimum 5-years handyman, landscaping, and facilities maintenance experience

• Finalists must consent to criminal background and driving record checks
